Abstract:
Using naturalistic stimuli such as audiovisual movies, prior studies have shown that high-order cortical areas support encoding and retrieval of complex event memories. Specifically, the posterior medial cortex (PMC) shows strong memory reactivation. How do high-order cortical areas code complex naturalistic events? The current study examined whether brain activity patterns associated with distinct events can be constructed from a small library of component activity states that appear across different movies during both encoding and recollection. Using a data-driven approach, we found that component activity states can be identified in PMC and that they explain event memory reactivation. The PMC component states were associated with action information of movie stimuli.
